Job Description
The Business Unit Director is accountable for the overall business performance, customer relationships, and growth of a portfolio of U.S. Government contracts. The BU Director manages the development and application of a mature/dynamic customer plan to manage a sustainable, long-term business portfolio. This role owns the Profit and Loss (P&L), serves as the senior customer-facing leader, and ensures delivery commitments align with contractual, financial, and strategic objectives while driving growth.
Responsibilities
- Customer & Account Management
- Serve as the primary executive interface to external customers
- Leads strategies for the assigned account that yield sales and open new opportunities, aligned to goals, budgets, and forecasts. Leverages close relationships with leaders of the assigned account and broader ecosystem to shape long-term strategic direction and influence business metrics.
- Proactively develops a strong, comprehensive understanding of customer’s business needs, priorities, strategies, and industry insights. Anticipates customer’s needs to deliver new insights on their business strategy, and educate customers on ways to address them jointly.
- Shows long-term differentiated value for the customer, leveraging industry expertise and guides internal colleagues on ways to develop deeper customer knowledge.
- Build trusted relationships with customer leadership and key stakeholders
- Lead contract negotiations, scope changes, and major issue resolution
- Ensure high customer satisfaction and long-term account health
- Resolve escalated contractual, financial, and execution issues
- Growth & Strategy
- Leads efforts with key internal and external partners and business including vertical industry partners with technical decision makers in developing, sharing, and promoting mutually beneficial, long-term, tailored account plans to grow sales and partner impact, leveraging deep relationships, influence, and industry expertise.
- Orchestrates the creation of long-term strategies aimed at building a level of loyalty that would be hard for competitors to overcome.
- Anticipates issues/risks on customer satisfaction, determines the root cause of problems, removes blockers, and establishes recovery action plan to improve customer’s overall experience.
- Identify and grow follow-on work, sole-source opportunities, and recompetes
- Shape capture strategies, pricing approaches, and win themes
- Collaborate with BD, engineering, and operations on proposals and expansions
- Define and execute the business unit’s strategic plan to align with overall company goals
- Business & Financial Leadership
- Own full P&L responsibility for the Business Unit, including revenue, margin, forecasting, and cost control
- Develop and execute business plans aligned with corporate strategy and customer priorities
- Drive program performance to meet or exceed contractual, financial, and schedule commitments
- Manage financial performance across CPFF, CPIF, T&M, and FFP contracts
- Ensure compliance with FAR, DFARS, EVMS, and DCMA expectations
- Portfolio & Program Oversight
- Provide executive oversight across a portfolio of programs and contracts
- Partner with Program Managers to assess risks, dependencies, and performance trends
- Make go/no-go decisions and prioritize investments across the portfolio
- People & Organizational Leadership
- Lead and develop Program Managers and other Business Unit leaders
- Establish a performance-driven, accountable culture
- Ensure staffing, skills, and organizational structure support current and future demand
- Work closely with Technical Director for technical execution of the business unit
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- 10+ years of experience in defense contracting and government program leadership
- Proven ownership of P&L and customer-facing accountability
- Experience managing DoD or IC customers
- Excellent executive communication and leadership skills
- Active Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility (current SSBI)
Highly Desired
- Master’s degree in business or engineering
- Prior role as Account Executive, Program Director, or Business Unit Director
- Existing Government or prime contractor relationships
- Familiarity with SATCOM architectures, mission operations, tasking workflows, and digital signal processing
- Active TS/SCI security clearance with current Counter-Intelligence (CI) Polygraph
